Hello, fellow cysters. Today I am providing a well-balanced breakfast smoothie. This smoothie is filled with healthy fats, low sugar fruits (gotta love berries), seeds that are packed with health-boosting minerals, and protein that will help keep you full and satisfied all morning long.
For those who have never heard of PCOS, it is a hormonal disorder that can cause an array of symptoms, such as, an imbalance in hormones (elevated or high testosterone), unwanted hair growth, irregular periods, development of numerous follicles on ovaries, weight gain, infertility, and more.
Within the past year, I was diagnosed with PCOS. However, I was aware from a very young age that there was something off within my body. I remember being hunched over at my desk in high school, almost in tears from the bloating and pain that can be accompanied by this syndrome. It took sixteen years for me to finally get a diagnosis. Let me say this one more time…SIXTEEN YEARS! If you’re ever feeling ignored by your doctor, just know that you are not alone. Most doctors just write it off as normal period symptoms and attempt to put the patient on birth control, which only masks the symptoms.
Since being diagnosed, I have worked extremely hard at trying to get my hormones straightened out. Doing this has meant that I have to hold myself accountable and make sure my life is overall balanced. Meaning my stress is low, my diet is on point, and I’m moving my body in some shape or form every day.
Having PCOS puts you at risk for insulin resistance which increases your risk of diabetes. This is why it is wise to reach for high-fiber, low-sugar carbohydrates, this will help stabilize insulin levels. Most of my sugars come from berries which by nature are naturally lower in sugar. This is why I’ve chosen to provide you with a delicious berry blast breakfast smoothie that I know you will enjoy!
Oh, and by the way, you don’t have to have PCOS to enjoy this smoothie. It’s a tasty meal for anyone!
Berry Blast Breakfast Smoothie
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (Here’s my favorite plant protein)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut yogurt
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
- 1/4 avocado
- 2 tbsp PB2 powder (or regular peanut or almond butter)
- 1 tbsp raw sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp raw sunflower seeds
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- handful of ice
In a high-speed blender, add the almond milk, avocado, coconut yogurt, protein powder, PB2 powder, cinnamon, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, blueberries, raspberries, and ice. Start on low and slowly increase the speed as the ingredients start to blend. Blend for about 1-2 minutes to make sure everything is fully combined and that you have a nice smooth texture. Pour into your favorite jar or mug and enjoy!
Note: Hormone balance is a lifelong struggle for those who suffer from PCOS and other hormonal and uterine problems. Please know that you have what it takes to overcome anything, including being a slave to your body. Fueling your body with the appropriate nutrients will not only curve some of those awful sugar cravings, but also help ease some anxiety and help clear up some of the brain fog associated with PCOS. I’m not a health care provider, I highly suggest that you talk to yours for any questions or concerns that you may have regarding your medical condition.
